Game of Thrones Writers Had A Big Fight Over Ned Stark’s Beheading Scene: “…We Didn’t Want To Show All The Blood & Spine”
Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are pretty excited about their new series, 3 Body Problem. Like GoT, which was based on George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, the upcoming Netflix series is also based on Liu Cixin’s novel, The Three-Body Problem. The GoT writer duo has teamed up with Alexander Woo for the sci-fi thriller.
For Game of Thrones, David and Weiss have worked together for several years. In an interview, David Benioff was asked how the scenes are in the writer’s room, considering Alexander has joined them for their Netflix series. In an interview with PTI, Benioff said that sometimes they all agree, which makes it easy to work. There are also times when they disagree, and they argue about it. When Alex joined them, they kept doing their thing. The trio split up the writing work within themselves for things to go smoothly.
Further, David Benioff was asked if there were any fights between him and D.B. Weiss during Game of Thrones. The writer said they don’t fight that often, unless it’s about who will write the last episode. The GoT writer also shared an anecdote of their big fight during Ned Stark’s (Sean Bean) beheading scene.

Game of Thrones Writer On Fight Regarding Ned Stark’s Death Scene
Game of Thrones’ former writer David Benioff shared, “I remember the big one we had was at the very end of season one when Ned Stark is beheaded. And we knew that we wanted to cut out of the scene in the episode right before you see his head fall off, but do you see the blade actually go into the neck, or do you see it stop like right before the neck.”
He added, “We had this long and boring fight about exactly which frame it should end on. We settled on a frame where you just see the blade starting to enter, so that no one would think that he’s actually alive. We wanted people to know that Ned Stark dies here, but we didn’t want to show all the blood and spine or any of that stuff.”
The scene where Ned Stark gets beheaded is one of the most shocking twists of Game of Thrones Season 1. In fact, that scene sets the tone that one must expect unexpected deaths in the series. So we are glad that the scene was shown the way it was!
Meanwhile, the 3 Body Problem series features Benedict Wong, Eiza Gonzalez, Marlo Kelly, John Bradley, Jess Hong and others. The series will stream on Netflix on March 21, 2024.
