The Great Indian Kapil Show Ep 1 Review: Sunil Grover’s Dafli & Ranbir Kapoor Turn Saving Grace As Kapil Sharma Digs Laughter From Stale ‘Nanga-Punga’ Jokes!
After a year, Kapil Sharma is back with his team on Netflix, putting up The Great Indian Kapil Show for audiences in 192 countries. The guests on the inaugural episode of the show were the Kapoor family sans Alia Bhatt! Ranbir Kapoor, along with Neetu Kapoor and Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, appeared on the show, which is currently playing on the USP of reconciliation between Kapil and his estranged co-star Sunil Grover!
While Ranbir and his family inaugurated the show by cutting a ribbon, the show escalated way too quickly from stale anecdotes to stale jokes. The Kapoor family stuck to sharing the same stories they have been sharing innumerable shows they have been to, including previous versions of Kapil’s shows.
What was stranger was the mother-daughter duo expressing their love for the son in the family and comparing his parenting skills to Alia again and again. But probably, we read too much between the lines.

Coming to the jokes, it was the same set that has been played multiple times ever since 2013, when the first episode of Comedy Nights With Kapil aired.
We tried breaking down what was not funny in the episode, and it seems like it was a major chunk of the 50-minute act put together by Kapil Sharma, Sunil Grover, Kiku Sharda, Krushna Abhishek, and Archana Puran Singh. But the best out of the lot, apart from Grover, was Ranbir Kapoor, who held the show better than the comedians.
The Same Old Jokes
The major problem with the show was the same old jokes. Be it about Archana Puran Singh’s earnings, career, or food, or be it the ‘connotational’ digs and puns on each other’s s*x lives. While people expected a great deal of laughter on Sunil and Kapil’s fight, there was not a single pun that worked apart from the turbulence jokes.
The Same Old Anecdotes
The second most important thing on Kapil’s show is the anecdotes, but all the stories this time were heard, probably because of Neetu Kapoor‘s frequent appearances on the show and other shows as well. Be it gifting Neetu’s jewelry to Ranbir’s girlfriend or how calm he is, there was no revelation.
Heavy Netflix Promotion
This show is being aired in 192 countries on Netflix. The line was repeated so many times that I had learned it by heart!
Very Little Sunil Grover
The show had very little of Sunil Grover, and most of it went without jokes and dialogues. Still, he, along with Ranbir Kapoor, was the best part of the episode.
Playing On Recalls!
The show played on a lot of recalls, but none of them worked apart from Sunil’s Dafli being ‘naaraaz’ with Ranbir Kapoor for betraying her and getting married to Alia Bhatt. For the unversed, in one of the episodes of previous Kapil shows, Sunil Grover’s Gutthi married Ranbir Kapoor.
