With the Season 1 finale leaving viewers with plenty to unpack, here’s the ending explained — including who killed Hal Jordan and whether more Manhunters are lurking in Rushville. Scroll below for the deets.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Final Problem, a Spanish limited series.

Lanterns season 1 plot

Season 1 of HBO’s Lanterns follows recruit John Stewart and legendary Green Lantern Hal Jordan as they investigate a murder in the rural American heartland. Set in the fictional town of Rushville, the series sees the two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery that uncovers secrets extending far beyond the crime itself. The Guardians chose John Stewart to replace Hal Jordan while the latter was unaware of his replacement. They experienced a rocky relationship throughout the show.

The biggest plot twist in HBO Max’s Lanterns was undoubtedly Hal Jordan’s death. The series unfolds across two timelines — 2016 and 2026 — gradually revealing the mystery surrounding the Manhunters and Hal’s eventual fate. Following Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern, this fresh take on the DC superhero was welcomed by many fans. The series received strong ratings from the critics as well.

Lanterns ending explained

Who killed Hal Jordan? Are There Multiple Manhunters Hiding In Rushville?

Hal Jordan’s death was revealed only in the first episode and remained a mystery until the season 1 finale. Sheriff Kerry impulsively killing Hal to protect her son Noah came as a surprise. However, Halogram’s gut was right the first time only when he doubted that Kerry was Hal Jordan‘s murderer. Kerry’s son, Noah, is a Manhunter, and Hal found out about it after saving Hal from firebomb injuries. He cures him in a similar way to how Zoe cured John Stewart a few episodes back.

Noah asked Hal to keep his real identity a secret, but Hal just couldn’t let it go. He thought Sheriff Kerry was unaware of it, and he went to tell her about Noah’s identity. While Hal was telling her about Noah’s identity, she shot him impulsively, resulting in his death. When Noah initially confesses to John Stewart of killing Hal, the latter doesn’t believe it. Noah also asks John to mercy kill him, but John lets him go. He tells Kerry that he knows she was the one who killed Hal because of Noah. Although Kerry wanted to turn herself in for killing Hal, John doesn’t let her as he believes Noah is different from the traditional Manhunters because of his upbringing.

What’s next for John Stewart?

John once again meets Guy Gardener and reveals that he has solved Hal’s murder. Guy sees the ring on John’s hand and the lantern forged by Sinestro, to which John tells Guy that he can remain the Green Lantern of Sector 2814, but he will also look after Earth as an independent Green Lantern. As they part ways, John bids farewell to Halogram. He charges his ring with a Sinestro-made lantern and reconciles with his mother, showing that John Stewart’s journey has only begun.

Will Hal Jordan be revived?

Although Sinestro mentioned to Halogram and John Stewart at one point that he could bring Hal Jordan back to life, nothing suggested he would do so. It could be one of the plots in the second season if there is one. For now, Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan is dead for real.

Will there be a second season?

With Sinestro and Noah being alive, the story is far from being over. Sinestro’s created lantern could be infected by the residual fear left on Antaan’s world, and this could impact John’s ring as well. There are a few unresolved issues, and, reportedly, a season 2 of Lanterns is already in development. Meanwhile, Aaron Pierre will return in David Corenswet-led Man of Tomorrow.
